What is Passion?- My version
Passion is everything, Passion is the way of life!- ME.
What is Passion? The most powerful definition for me is from Denis Diderot (1713-1784):
"Penchants, inclinations, desires, and aversions carried to a certain degree of intensity, combined with an indistinct sensation of pleasure or pain, occasioned or accompanied by some irregular movement of the blood and animal spirits, are what we call passions. They can be so strong as to inhibit all practice of personal freedom, a state in which the soul is in some sense rendered passive; hence the name passions. This inclination or so-called disposition of the soul is born of the opinion we hold that a great good or a great evil is contained in an object which in and of itself arouses passion"
Here's my definition:
"Intense involvement that makes you forget the three external variables: Environment, time, and body, a sense of being responsible and carefree at the same time, a feeling that could very well be compared to feeling an evening breeze caressing the core of you, and by the end of the action or thought, you'd feel relieved and renewed".
Almost all of us are truly passionate about something or some thought, even though, ideally living a life filled with passion for everyday tasks is a better way to live. But as we grow, we lose track and let the passion fade at the back of our minds. We become more routinized and mundaneness becomes an inevitability. We talk ourselves out of the little spark of passion that arises by stating, "But, what will passion yield? Ain't I too old for that? Get a life! I'm not that good anyways!" and modified statements along those lines!
But what passion yields is something immense! The state of FLOW is the gift that is born out of Passion. If you are passionate enough about a task, you'd reach a state of total forgetfulness of the variables in and around you and you'd feel as if your brain just runs the pre-saved program of creating the creative piece! It's like for a painter just coloring the Masterpiece already sketched out for him on the Canvas. It feels like for a cook just moving her hands to the instructions of a very familiar but indescribable Internal Master Chef. It feels like the Words being Whispered in the writer's ears while resting the pen on the sheet. It feels for the player like the wind just moving the soccer ball through his legs to the Goalpost. These are Passion's outcomes.
I am passionate about most things I do in a day, and a few actions amongst them yield the State of FLOW!
So, you should discover your Passion lurking at the rear end of your mind by merely brainstorming the times when you felt totally yourself! Now, bring it to the forefront, and give it just 30 minutes today to let it bloom! If you like how you felt at the end of it, won't you give it another shot tomorrow or the day after?! After all, we live to feel blissed out!
This is not just for the feeling part of it, but what Passion and the state of Flow do to your brain is quite miraculous. The prefrontal Cortex in full function to incorporate passion into your mind and action means that it's the best way to change yourself for the better!
