52 life lessons I learnt in the last 25 years

Today is my 26th Birthday, leading me to the second half of my 20's. I have gone through several crests, good amount of troughs and some stagnant periods. Almost every stage of my life, until today, has given me lessons, a few of which I remember, many already forgotten. Here is a few of them that I remember from the top of my head.



Before we head there, I would like to thank each and everyone who shaped me into Sruthi that I am today. Starting from my parents, brother and cousin, my uncles and aunts, my grandparents, my school teachers, Principal and head mistress, my classmates- both sweet and rude, my school friends, area friends, tuition teachers and friends, bus mates, college admin staffs, lecturers, the Chairman, my college friends and haters, my crushes, my admirers, my co-hosts of cultural and formal programs, Idea ITL Chairman and colleagues, my junior and seniors of school and college, my Military class sir and students, Imarticus lecturers and students, my husband, my in laws, my husband's family members, friends in Canada, my Branch managers, my colleagues, my family doctor, my dentist, the doctors who helped me recover from the accidents and sicknesses, the strangers who have helped me thus far, the company that I work for, the doctor and his team that delivered my baby, my Akshara, Admissions committee of Queen's, my Professors- Master's, Admin staffs, my team at work- Friends, Boss and my branch FSRs, and my Master's collegemates. A big thank you for all of you and more that I may have missed in the list.


52 lessons from my experience:

  1. Be bold and don't be afraid to be wrong.

  2. Ask and you may not receive, don't ask, you will not receive.

  3. Hard work, hardly abandons you.

  4. Confidence is contagious and hypnotic.

  5. Talk sensibly and talk loud enough for the person/people you are talking to, hear clearly.

  6. Smile at people, those of who you know and those you don't.

  7. One kind act can elevate someone's moment or day, sometimes, one's life.

  8. Accept the situation as it presents, you just cannot rebel against what's not in your control.

  9. Make the best use of the dead space between the stimulus and the response. That's where your power lies.

  10. Respect everyone- young or old, educated or uneducated, smart or ignorant.

  11. See people for what they are, not what you want them to be.

  12. All that you see is perception, not reality.

  13. Strive to give your best in every deed that you take up.

  14. Body is an irreplaceable tool for everything that you want to accomplish, taking care of it is crucial.

  15. Self care is not always a bubble bath, sometimes, it can look like walking away from a toxic situation or individual.

  16. Several people will like you and only few will truly love you. Do not miss them in life.

  17. You literally cannot face a problem that has no solution.

  18. The time is the answer for several questions.

  19. Patience sometimes wins life's battles.

  20. The ashes smeared on Lord Shiva's body and Memento Mori concept of Stoicism are remarkably the same.

  21. Prayer or meditation is thinking about one particular idea repeatedly at any given time.

  22. Visualization is an intensely powerful tool.

  23. Realizing the worst possible outcome before taking up a task can help avoid heartbreaks and disappointments.

  24. Planner is surely one of the best investments you can make to use your non-renewable asset (time), efficient.

  25. Finding a true friend and/or love is rare, and retaining that in your life requires effort.

  26. Reading, and listening to experienced and wise people, by far are the best ways to improve your knowledge.

  27. Active listening is far too obscured.

  28. Being in the present is both the easiest and the toughest thing to do at the same time.

  29. Communication is the key- Have fruitful conversations with family members, friends, baby, professors, managers, and colleagues.

  30. Two ears and one mouth for a reason.

  31. Have a passion or two, and treat each of them like your affair.

  32. Watching the sunrise by the lake on a spring morning is by far the best therapy.

  33. Goal setting is often too overused and under-implemented.

  34. Visible vision boards indeed influence your actions.

  35. Decision fatigue, swimmer's body fallacy and other 97 of Rolf Dobelli's illusions are definitely existent.

  36. First impression is important and sustaining that impression is far more important.

  37. It is always not black or white, its not always success or failure, there's always a grey area, there is learning and that's by far the best place to be in.

  38. Doing is far better than yapping.

  39. Give 100% in all that you do at a given moment.

  40. Your baby is a new set of lenses you have been given, to view the world more closely and differently.

  41. Writing about the overwhelming feelings for your child is one of the toughest challenges.

  42. What is bad for the hive is bad for the bee.

  43. Treat the body rigorously, to show who it's master is.

  44. Cleanliness and organized spaces are the two best decorations you can display at your home.

  45. When feeling low or stressed, write it out to yourself before communicating it to those who you think gave it to you.

  46. Harm is self-inflicted as the Stoics say.

  47. Each day is a bonus life, since, we could have died the previous day but we didn't.

  48. Gratitude is a powerful form of satisfaction.

  49. Brain Dumping and Mind mapping are the best ways to provide structure to your thoughts.

  50. Read and listen to non-fiction books that help grow your intellect, emotional intelligence, and mental power.

  51. If you cry, out of no sadness but ecstasy- In a religious shrine or during meditation, cultivate this further- since, that's the conscience communicating with the World.

  52. Knowledge essentially is dirt if unshared.
